Mining Logistics in the Andean Corridor: Keys for 2025

We analyze the logistical challenges and opportunities facing mining in the Argentine Andean corridor. From access to Vaca Muerta to high-altitude operations.

The Andean corridor as a strategic axis

The Andes mountain range is not just a geographic barrier: it is the most relevant logistics corridor for Argentine mining. From the operations in San Juan and La Rioja to the Patagonian sites of Neuquén and Río Negro, the movement of supplies, machinery and housing modules requires rigorous planning and specialized operators.

At Rutas del Sur we have spent over a decade moving equipment and materials in this region. This is what we have learned.

The three critical factors in mining logistics

1. Accessibility and road conditions

Mining sites are rarely near the main routes. Many operations in Salta, Jujuy or the Puna require access via gravel roads, with width and height restrictions. Prior knowledge of the route —before loading— is essential.

Our team conducts a route survey for each new operation, evaluating:

  • Bridges (load capacity)
  • Tunnels or passes under viaducts (clearance height)
  • Seasonal conditions (snow, mud, flooding)
  • Availability of fuel and assistance along the way

2. Modules and oversized equipment

A folding housing module can measure up to 12 meters long and 3.2 meters high. Transporting it involves permit procedures before provincial and national highway authorities, police-escort coordination, and in many cases, nighttime travel.

The advantage of the folding module over the conventional one is precisely logistical: in transport position it takes up half the space, which reduces costs and simplifies the permits.

If you need to move modules to your operation site, the first step is to send us the GPS coordinates of the destination and the access details. We do the rest.

3. Timing and operating windows

Mines do not wait. Logistical delays have direct costs on the operation. That is why we work with confirmed delivery windows and real-time tracking of the equipment.

Vaca Muerta: the most dynamic case

Neuquén concentrates Argentina's largest Oil & Gas activity. The demand for camps, modular offices and industrial sanitary units in the Vaca Muerta area grew by 40% in the last two years.

The particular characteristics of this area:

  • Permanent access needed: many wells require continuous supply throughout the campaign
  • Extreme weather conditions: sub-zero temperatures in winter, intense heat in summer
  • Speed of deployment: the drilling site can change within weeks

For these projects, folding modules and self-contained industrial bathrooms are the most efficient solution.

How we work with mining operators

Our process for mining projects is simple:

  1. Initial inquiry: you tell us what you need, when and where
  2. Survey: we evaluate access, permits and logistics
  3. Proposal: we send you a quote with a guaranteed delivery time
  4. Execution: we mobilize the equipment with permanent tracking

If you have an ongoing or upcoming project, do not wait until the last minute. Advance planning always reduces costs.
